Mendy was suspended by the club in August 2021 after being arrested on charges of rape and attempted rape against a number of women and did not play for them again until his contract expired this summer.

Mendy was cleared of all his rape charges in July this year and has since signed for French Ligue 1 side Lorient, where he has made three substitute appearances this season.

Mendy claims Manchester City stopped paying him after he was arrested and has reported them to the Employment Tribunal.

A statement from Mendy's lawyer read: “Nick De Marco KC (instructed by Laffer Abogados Madrid) is acting for the former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million pound claim for unauthorised deductions from wages.

“Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr Mendy being charged with various offences all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023."

Mendy joined Manchester City from AS Monaco for £52m in the summer of 2017 and went on to win three Premier League titles with Pep Guardiola's side.

The 29-year-old was a member of France's 2018 FIFA World Cup winning side.
