The win puts Xabi Alonso's side 16 points clear of nearest challengers Bayern Munich with five games still to play.

Leverkusen are still unbeaten in 43 games across all competitions this season and their record in the Bundesliga reads 29 games played, 25 games won, four draws, 74 goals scored and 19 conceded.

Bayern Munich had won each of the last 11 Bundesliga titles before Leverkusen snatched the title this time around.

Leverkusen are still in the mix to complete a famous treble, with the Europa League and DFB-Pokal still up for grabs.

On Sunday at the Bay Arena, Nigeria striker Victor Boniface set Leverkusen on their way with a first half penalty before former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka doubled their advantage on the hour mark.

Substitute Florian Wirtz completed the rout with his first senior hattrick to send Leverkusen fans into a frenzy.
