Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been appointed by Bundesliga side Augsburg as part of the club’s coaching staff.

The 49-year-old former Germany international goalkeeper has been out of work since leaving as part of Arsene Wenger’s coaching staff at Arsenal last season.

Augsburg are struggling in the Bundesliga this season as they currently lie a place above the relegation places with only three wins from 19 games.

Lehmann, who holds the record for the goalkeeper with most consecutive clean sheets in the history of the UEFA Champions League (10), has signed a deal until the end of next season.

Augsburg head coach Manuel Baum said: "I am pleased that we were able to win Jens Lehmann as an Assistant Coach."

"He is an absolute expert who has a lot of experience."

"I'm looking forward to working with him because I'm sure he'll enrich our team and work with the team."

Lehmann was part of Arsenal’s 'Invincibles' side that went the entire 2003/2004 Premier League season unbeaten.

"Augsburg have developed incredibly in recent years," Lehmann told the club's official website.

"This is a brilliant opportunity for me to work as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and to help the players reach their potential on the pitch."

Lehmann also played for Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, and Stuttgart in a storied career that also included appearances at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.
