Wenger Wants EUROS And World Cup Held Every Two Years
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for the UEFA Nations League to be scrapped, making way for the European Championship and FIFA World Cup to be held every two years.
The Nations League was instituted by UEFA in 2018 to do away with international friendlies for more competitive games, with Portugal winning the first edition last year but the format of the competition looks complicated to the average football fan.
The competing teams are split into four leagues divided into groups and promotion and relegation at stake between the different leagues.
The European Championships and the World Cup are held every four years. This summer’s EURO 2020 tournament has been postponed to next year because of the coronavirus pandemic while the next World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022.
Wenger, who is currently FIFA’s football development chief, has opined that the most glamorous tournaments need to be held more regularly.
“We need to get rid of the Nations League and find clearer events that everyone understands,” Wenger told Bild.
“If you ask people in the street what the Nations League is, you won’t find many able to explain it.
“We need to have as few events as possible.
“One World Cup and one European Championship every other year would probably be more appropriate for a modern world.”
