United Activate De Gea Contract Extension

Manchester United have triggered the option of extending David De Gea’s contract by a further year to avoid any uncertainty regarding the goalkeeper’s future.

The former Atletico Madrid shot stopper’s contract was set to expire in the summer but United had the option to extend it by a further year.

The 28-year-old has won Manchester United’s player of the season four times in the past five seasons, and he would have been eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1 January 2019 had United not taken up the option.

De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011 and has won all three English domestic cups as well as the Europa League.

Only a faulty fax machine prevented De Gea from joining Real Madrid on transfer deadline day in August 2015,after an agreement worth £29m plus Keylor Navas had been agreed between the Red Devils and Los Blancos.
