Arsenal Gives Solskjaer First Premier League Defeat
By Max Wise
Arsenal gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first defeat as Manchester United manager in the Premier League after a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils at the Emirates stadium on Sunday.
Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the scorers as the Gunners moved within a point of third-place Tottenham, with United a place and two points behind the hosts.
Manchester United hit the crossbar from their first attack after in-form Romelu Lukaku’s shot bounced off the woodwork following a glorious cross into the six yard box by Luke Shaw in the 9th minute.
Arsenal’s fast start yielded positive results two minutes later as they took the lead through Granit Xhaka’s 25 yard strike that wrong footed David de Gea into the corner of the net.
Manchester United hit the woodwork for the second time in the 19th minute through Fred, whose strike from Pogba’s pass struck the foot of the post, before Pogba hit a 35 yard effort straight at Bernd Leno.
Leno again came to Arsenal’s rescue when he rushed off his line to stop Lukaku’s effort from six yards out with an outstretched leg in the 51st minute.
Alexandre Lacazette fell into the United penalty box from Fred’s challenge and referee Jon Moss pointed to the spot for a spot kick in the 67th minute.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stepped up, and unlike last week against Spurs, he tucked his effort straight down the middle for Arsenal’s second of the game.
Four minutes later, Victor Lindelof misjudged a header, allowing Lacazette in on goal, but the French striker dragged his effort wide.
Marcus Rashford had the chance to pull one back for the Red Devils in stoppage time, but the he could only divert Luke Shaw’s cross straight at Leno.
