Osimhen Wins 2022/2023 Serie A Player Of The Year
Victor Osimhen has been named the Serie A player of the year for the 2022/2023 season.
Osimhen is the first ever African to win the award following a season in which he also became the first African to emerge top scorer in the Italian top flight with 26 goals in 32 games.
The 24-year-old's goals helped Napoli win the Serie A title for the first time in 33 years.
Osimhen also earned a spot in the Serie A team of the year and finished in eighth position at the recent Ballon D'or awards.
"Thank you for the recognition and awards, thank you my family, friends and supporters for your votes and unending support," Osimhen, who finished with 31 goals in 39 games across all competitions last season, said in a message posted on X.
Osimhen has been troubled by injury this season but has still scored six goals in 10 Serie A games.
Osimhen is also a firm favourite to scoop the African Footballer of the year on December 11.
No Nigerian has won Africa's top individual football honour since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
