Olympique Lyon have sacked manager Fabio Grosso after just seven games in charge.

Lyon turned to their former defender after dismissing Laurent Blanc in September following a tough start to the season.

But Grosso won just one of his seven games in charge and Lyon remain bottom of the Ligue 1 table and five points from safety.

Grosso's spell at the Groupama Stadium took a turn for the worse in October when he suffered facial injuries after the Lyon bus was attacked by fans of Olympique Marseille on their way to a Ligue 1 game.

His last game was a 2-0 home defeat to Lille on Sunday.

"Olympique Lyonnais would like to thank Fabio Grosso and his assistants for their dedication and professionalism since taking over the professional team," Lyon said in a statement.

Academy coach Pierre Sage has been placed in interim charge until a permanent replacement is named.

Before his short spell at Lyon, Grosso's last managerial role was at Frosinone in Serie B but left after guiding them into the Serie A at the end of the 2022/2023 season.

The 45-year-old struck the decisive penalty kick when Italy beat France to win the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
