Luke Shaw Welcomes Lukaku To Europa League
Manchester United has mocked former teammate Romelu Lukaku with a welcome message after his Inter Milan side were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League.
Inter Milan finished third in a group comprising Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague, and will drop down to the Europa League where Manchester United are based.
Lukaku was on the scoresheet on Tuesday night but his strike was not enough as Barcelona run away 2-1 winners to allow Borussia Dortmund sneak into the knockout stages at Inter’s expense following a 2-1 win over Slavia Prague at the Signal Iduna Park.
Lukaku was part of the Manchester United side that missed out on Champions League qualification last season following a sixth place finish.
But after a £74m switch to the San Siro in the summer, the former Chelsea striker got to enjoy a taste of Europe’s premier club competition, scoring two goals in five appearances, while Manchester United continued their Europa League journey.
Shaw wrote “Welcome Back” on Tuesday in response to a tweet by Lukaku in October that showed the Belgian striker laughing in training with the caption “UCL”, the acronym for the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester United, who have already secured qualification from their Europa League group, could face Inter Milan in the last 32 if the Red Devils fail to top their group.
The draw for the knockout stages of the Europa League will be held in Switzerland on Monday.
Lukaku has scored 12 goals from 20 appearances since joining the Nerazzurri.
