FIFA Clears Eight Brazilian Players To Feature In Premier League This Weekend
The Brazil Football Association have waived a FIFA rule that would have prevented Premier League players who failed to honour international call-ups from competing in the top flight this weekend.
Earlier this week the Brazil FA invoked FIFA’s ‘five-day rule’ preventing players who failed to honour international commitments from competing for their clubs for five days after the international break.
Premier League clubs unanimously opted to block their Brazilian players from representing their country in the September international break which would have required them to quarantine for ten days upon their return to the UK.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino failed in an attempt to get the UK government to waive the 10-day quarantine period for players who travelled to countries on their red list.
However, following extensive discussions between the Premier League, FIFA and the Brazil FA late on Friday, the eight Brazilian players from five Premier League clubs have been cleared to play this weekend.
Players who would have been affected by this ‘five-day rule’ included Liverpool trio Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.
Manchester City duo Ederson and Gabriel Jesus, Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, Manchester United midfielder Fred and Leeds United winger Raphinha would all have been missing in action for their clubs this weekend.
