Mitoma missed the 1-1 draw with Everton over the weekend because of the same issue.

One of the most exciting wingers in the top flight in recent seasons, Mitoma has been blighted by fitness issues this term.

The Japan international has played 26 times for Brighton this season, scoring three goals and providing six assists across all competitions.

But he has only played twice for Brighton since December 21 because an ankle problem and international commitment for Japan during the Asian Cup in January.

“I think we lost Mitoma until the end of the season,” Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said on Tuesday ahead of Brighton’s FA Cup fifth-round game at Wolverhampton Wanderers. 

“It’s an important problem. I think two or three months, finished the season.”

On the rest of his squad, De Zerbi added: “(Evan) Ferguson tomorrow, he can’t play (due to an ankle injury). (Danny) Welbeck has a problem and we have to make a check.

“(Joel) Veltman as well can’t play and the other players injured can’t play.”
