Algeria Boss Belmadi Calls For Calm Over Mahrez's Poor AFCON Form

Algeria manager Djamel Belmadi has backed Riyad Mahrez to find his best form at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria Boss Belmadi Calls For Calm Over Mahrez's Poor AFCON Form

Mahrez has looked unconvincing in Algeria's first two games in the Ivory Coast and was hooked off with 15 minutes remaining as the Desert Foxes chased a late equaliser against Burkina Faso in their second group game.

Algeria will need to beat Mauritania on Tuesday to seal progress to the knockout round but Mahrez's form so far has been a concern.

The 32-year-old now plays his football in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli but was a key component of Algeria's 2019 AFCON winning squad.

Belmadi is not writing off his captain just yet as Algeria attempt to taste victory for the first time in six games at the continent's showpiece tournament on Tuesday.

Belmadi told a press conference: “I don’t want people to forget what Mahrez can do.

“These were not his best two matches in the national team, but do not kill him quickly.

“I will not tell you whether he will be a starter or on the bench, that is not the most important thing.

“He is still our leader. He has always played under pressure. The team and I have complete confidence in him.”

Mahrez has 31 goals in 92 caps for Algeria since making his international debut in 2014.
