West Ham Dent Arsenal
By Max Wise
Declan Rice’s had the perfect end to his last week as a teenager as his first ever West Ham goal condemned Arsenal to their fifth Premier League defeat of the season with 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium on Saturday.
The Hammers beat Unai Emery's Gunners 1-0 at the London Stadium on Saturday with Rice providing the only goal of the game in the 48th minute to complete an assist from former Arsenal player Samir Nasri.
The result leaves Arsenal in fifth position but a win for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspurs on Sunday could see them leapfrog the Gunners, whiles West Ham’s win takes them to 8th spot on 31 points.
Samir Nasri was causing mayhem for his former side, and it was his lay off for Felipe Anderson that provided the game’s first real bright spot, allowing the Brazilian to hit a low, skimming shot just wide of Bernd Leno’s post in the 32nd minute.
On the stroke of half-time, Declan Rice had a head-in-hands moment when he out jumped Mustafi to meet Felipe Anderson’s corner but he could only direct is header wide.
Declan Rice turns 20 on Monday, and the teenager made up for his earlier miss with his first goal for West Ham United just after the break.
Felipe Anderson’s cross into the Arsenal penalty box was poorly headed away by Xhaka onto the path of Nasri, who cushioned the ball into the path of Rice for the teenager to hit a first-time effort past Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.
The introduction of the departing Aaron Ramsey slapped some life into the Arsenal attack as the Welshman’s delicious flick from Maitland-Niles’s pass found Alex Iwobi, but the Nigerian’s shot just drifted wide of the far corner in the 67th minute.
For West Ham, the sight of Marko Arnautovic’s wave to the crowd after his substitution might send a subliminal message to the fans that he could well be on his way to China after the Hammers received a £35m offer for the Austrian from an unnamed Chinese club.
