TODAY IN HISTORY: West Ham Beat Arsenal 3-0 To Become The Last Away Team To Win At Highbury
By Joshua Walters
On this day 13 years ago, West Ham went to Arsenal’s former home ground Highbury with an underdog tag, and left with an emphatic 3-0 win.
The win would later become the last for any visiting team at Highbury as Arsenal left the grounds to their then newly-built stadium, Emirates Stadium soon after.
Nigel Reo-Coker put the Hammers in front against the run of play in the first half.
The English midfielder fed on a pass inside the Arsenal final third and made a quick run into the hosts’ penalty box to power a grounder into the left bottom corner.
Bobby Zamora made it two soon afterwards by controlling a long pass with his chest to shrug off a challenge from an Arsenal defender before curling in with a spectacular left-footed strike.
The Gunners’ hope for a turnaround dashed midway in the second half when Robert Pires misdirected a strike into his own net in an attempt to clear Matthew Etherington’s goalbound strike from the goal line.
