Pochettino Casts Doubts On Spurs Future
By Joshua Walters
Tottenham Hotspurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has given no assurances of his long-term future at the club as he continues to be linked with the Manchester United managerial position.
The former Espanyol boss is in his fifth season at the club after joining from Southampton in the summer of 2014.
The Argentine trainer has guided the North-London club to Champions League qualification in three of his four full seasons in charge.
The 46-year-old stated a couple of weeks ago that he hoped to emulate the longevity of legendary Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, but is now singing a different tune as he cast doubt over his future.
“I can’t promise that,” Pochettino said in a press conference ahead of Tottenham’s home game against Watford at Wembley on Wednesday.
“It depends on the mood of the chairman, on the decision of the company, it is not only my decision.”
“I signed for five years. I am respecting my contract. But to sign a five-year contract does not mean you’ll be here forever.”
“I love my job and of course I love a big challenge. When I arrived at Tottenham, I knew very well the challenge would be tough.
“We are victims of our own success, the club was at a different level. I am a very positive person and is going to stick with the club until the end to help achieve all they want.”
The downside of Pochettino’s reign at Spurs has been his inability to deliver silverware at the club as the Lily Whites were knocked out of two cup competitions in the space of a week by Chelsea and Crystal Palace recently, leaving the Premier League and Champions league as their best chance of winning a trophy this season.
