Man United Miss Out On Champions League With Draw At Huddersfield
By Max Wise
There will be no Champions League football for Manchester United next season after the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw at relegated Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Fourteen teams have won at the John Smith's Stadium this season but Manchester United failed to have their name included in that list.
The Old Trafford outfit are stuck on 6th position on 66 points, the same position former manager Jose Mourinho left them following his dismissal in December last year.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will now have to settle for Europa League football next season as the summer promises to bring wholesale changes in the club’s playing body.
United went ahead in the 8th minute after Scott McTominay hit a left footed shot from just inside the area past Jonas Lossl in the Huddersfield Town goal.
David de Gea has come in for a lot criticism in recent weeks, but the Spaniard came to United’s rescue by smothering a one-on-one situation with Karlan Grant in the 40th minute.
Pogba nearly doubled the visitors’ lead three minutes to half time when he headed against the Huddersfield cross-bar.
Back from the break, the hosts forced the visitors into errors, and when Alexis Sanchez gave the ball away on the left wing in the 52nd minute, Karlan Grant curled a left footed effort just over the top.
Out of nothing, Huddersfield pulled level after some quick thinking by their goalkeeper, who gathered a corner kick and launched his team into a quick counter attack. Luke Shaw, who was the last man back for the visitors, failed to deal with the goal kick, which allowed Isaac Mbenza a clean run on goal and finish past De Gea on the hour mark.
Ashley Young whipped in a free-kick which Phil Jones steered just over with his right shin in the 73rd minute before Pogba hit the woodwork for the second time with a lovely curling effort in the 88th minute.
