By Max Wise
Everton condemned Chelsea to their fourth defeat in their last five Premier League away games with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The result means Chelsea miss the chance to move into the top four as they remain in sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with eight games remaining.
Everton on the other hand, move above Bournemouth into eleventh place on 40 points from 31 games played.
Chelsea made a bright start to the game with Marcos Alonso feeding Eden Hazard in the Everton area in the 6th minute but the Belgian’s effort forced a good save from Jordan Pickford at the near post
Two minutes later, Gonzalo Higuain slipped in Hazard whose lovely curling effort bounced off the right post and evaded the Chelsea players who were trying to follow up.
Four minutes after the break, Everton broke the dead lock through Brazilian Richarlison. Kepa made a good save to keep out Dominic Calvert-Lewin but Richarlison reacted quickest to pounce on the rebound and nod the ball into the net from a few yards out.
In the 60th minute Pickford came to Everton’s rescue again after the England goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to keep out Gonzalo Higuaín’s deflected effort.
Everton were awarded a penalty with twenty minutes remaining after Marcos Alonso clipped Richarlison in the box and Gylfi Sigurdsson stepped up to have his effort saved by Kepa, but the rebound fell straight into the path of Sigurdsson to bury the ball into the back of the net.
Substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi forced Pickford into another good save with a good strike from range in the 82nd minute but Chelsea could not breach the Everton defence.
