Dortmund Reward Manager Favre With New One-Year Deal

Borussia Dortmund have rewarded manager Lucien Favre with a new one-year deal following an impressive first season at the Signal Iduna Park.

Favre’s new contract will take him to the end of the 2020/21 season.

After joining the club from French side Nice last summer, the Swiss manager lit up the Signal Iduna Park with some exciting and attacking brand of football that threatened to derail Bayern Munich’s monopoly of the Bundesliga.

Dortmund gave the German champions a good run for their money in a keenly contested title race that lasted until the final day of the season.

Bayern Munich eventually pipped Dortmund to the title by two points but the club’s hierarchy have been impressed with Favre’s methods and have decided to extend his stay by a further year.

The club confirmed the news on their twitter handle with a short statement that read: "Our head coach Lucien Favre extends his contract prematurely by one year. #Favre2021."

"Lucien has created clear structures and developed our players," sporting director Michael Zorc told the club’s website.

"He has met our expectations 100 per cent," added CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. "It is logical that we want to shape the future together.”

Dortmund have further moved to bolster their squad with the acquisition of Thorgan Hazard, brother of new Real Madrid recruit Eden, Nico Schulz and Julian Brandt.

Speaking to the club's official website upon the announcement, Favre declared: "I’m delighted to have the opportunity to shape the sporting future of this tradition-steeped club.

"I am looking forward to continuing the constructive and successful cooperation with the entire BVB team."
