Jerome Boateng has revealed the reason he refused to join Manchester United this summer and says he found the Old Trafford outfit to be lower to Bayern Munich.
The Bayern Munich defender was Jose Mourinho’s top target in the summer transfer window, but turned down the offer, choosing to remain with the Bavarians.
“I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me”, Boateng told Bild. “I explained to Jose that it’s difficult to leave Bayern, and if I do, everything has to be in place to top this club.”
The center back revealed he had offers from PSG and several other European clubs, but decided to remain at Bayern Munich despite fancying a new challenge.
Boateng has been a regular for the Bavarians since joining them from Manchester City in 2011 on a four-year deal for a fee of €13.5 million.
He has scored four goals in 158 appearances for the German outfit.
“I had inquiries from PSG and Manchester United. I did not want to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge. I feel well at Bayern. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
