Spurs Appeal Son’s Red Card Against Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspurs have launched an appeal to have Son Heung-Min’s red card against Chelsea last Sunday overturned.
Son was red carded by referee Anthony Taylor in the 62nd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 loss for catching Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in the ribs with his boot following an aerial challenge.
The decision to dismiss the South Korean was made following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Son is now set to miss Tottenham’s next three league games against Brighton and Hove Albion on Boxing day, Norwich and Southampton.
Tottenham manager, Jose Mourinho disagreed with the decision to send Son off and accused Rudiger of playacting after the game.
The Portuguese manager has now confirmed that the club will contest the decision by filing an appeal.
"I don't think it was a red card," Mourinho said ahead of the Boxing Day visit of Brighton.
"I think VAR is to support football, to bring truth to the spectacle of football and yesterday they did that with the penalty decision (which went against Spurs in the first half).
"And they killed the game with the Son decision. I hope Son is not punished five times.
"One time was the foul that Rudiger did on him. The second he was sent off. The third would be not to play against Brighton, the fourth would be not to play against Norwich and the fifth would be not to play against Southampton.
"I think being punished twice is enough. He doesn't need the third, the fourth and the fifth."
The dismissal was Son’s third in the Premier League this season, although he had one overturned against Everton earlier in the season for the challenge that broke Andre Gomes’ ankle.
