Spanish La Liga Suspended Indefinitely
La Liga authorities and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have agreed to indefinitely suspend the Spanish top flight until the government gives them the all clear to resume.
The Coronavirus pandemic led to the suspension of La Liga for two weeks after some members of the Real Madrid basketball team, who share facilities with the club’s football players, caught the virus.
Players and staff of both Valencia and Deportivo Alaves have subsequently been infected with Covid-19 as the virus shows no signs of slowing down.
A country-wide lockdown has been extended by Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez until April 11.
La Liga president Javier Tebas recently flirted with the idea of the league resuming in the middle of May but it is still unclear whether that timeline is still feasible.
"The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-La Liga Coordination Agreement AGREES [to] the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk," a statement read.
"Both the RFEF and La Liga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people and also share our condolences for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of soccer to the many families that are losing loved ones."
Spain have recorded over 33,000 Coronavirus cases and 2,182 deaths.
With eleven games remaining, the La Liga title race is far from being decided as Barcelona hold a two-point advantage over Real Madrid.
