Rooney Tests Negative For Coronavirus After Contact With Infected Visitor

The Derby County player-coach was gifted a watch at his home last Thursday by his friend, Josh Bardsley, who had been instructed to take a Covid-19 test and later tested positive.

Rooney played for Derby on Friday against Watford in the Championship before becoming aware that his visitor had tested positive for the virus.

The former England and Manchester United captain has however tested negative for the virus but will nonetheless sit out Derby’s next three games in line with UK and EFL covid-19 guidelines as he has to self-isolate for 14 days for coming into contact with the infected person.

Rooney tweeted: "Just received the news that my covid-19 test has shown I do not have the virus. Delighted for myself and family but obviously angry and disappointed that I now have to self-isolate and miss vital games for Derby County."

The 34-year-old will miss Derby’s game at Huddersfield on Tuesday and matches against Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City but will be available to face Bournemouth on October 31.

Derby’s only win from five championship games this season was secured by Rooney’s late strike against Norwich City on matchday 4.

A Derby spokesperson said: "Derby County is relieved and extremely pleased to learn that Wayne Rooney's test results for COVID-19 have been returned negative.

"We are, however, extremely disappointed that the selfish and careless act of one individual put both Wayne and his family at risk, as well as having a detrimental impact on Derby County Football Club.

"In line with UK Government and EFL guidelines, Wayne must self-isolate until 29th October and therefore will not be available for the next three matches.

"We are positive that Wayne will be available for selection for the club's Sky Bet Championship fixture at AFC Bournemouth on 31st October."
