Real Sociedad Invite Entire Becerril Township To La Liga Game After Copa Del Rey Thrashing
Spanish top flight side Real Sociedad have invited the entire town of Becerril de Campos to a future La Liga game of their choice as a goodwill gesture after demolishing their local side 8-0 in the Copa del Rey on Thursday.
Becerril, which has a population of less than a thousand inhabitants, play in the fourth tier of Spanish football.
The club’s players, who hold down other menial jobs like factory working, were down by two goals in the first half at their Estadio Nueva Balastera and ended up shipping in six more goals after the break, including a hattrick from former Manchester United forward Adnan Januzaj.
Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay was left impressed by Becerril’s reception and effort during the game, and has decided to pay them back with the kind gesture.
CD Becerril’s players, coaching staff, directors and the entire town will have their match tickets, transportation and dinner taken care of by Sociedad in the trip to the Anoeta stadium.
"Yesterday was an authentic festival of football," CD Becerril president Juan Antonio Redondo told MARCA.
"We're very grateful for the treatment of Real Sociedad and how they supported us despite the big scoreline.
"The president [Aperribay] told me that whenever we wanted, we're invited to go to San Sebastian to see a top-flight match, whichever one we want, with tickets, travel and lunch for the team and board paid for.
"He also told me that the invitation was extended to the whole town and that he'd send coaches to take the residents to San Sebastian.
"We have to look at our calendar and we'll be delighted to go when we can."
