Ranieri Appointed New Sampdoria Manager
Struggling Italian Serie A side Sampdoria have appointed former Chelsea and Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri as the club’s new boss.
Ranieri has signed a two-year contract at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and has been tasked with overturning the club’s fortunes following a dismal start to the season.
Sampdoria are bottom of the league with just one win in seven games so far which led to the dismissal of Eusebio de Francesco last week.
A statement on Sampdoria’s official website read: “President Massimo Ferrero and UC Sampdoria welcome Claudio Ranieri, who has joined the club as manager responsible for the first team until 30 June 2021.
“The president is looking for the technician, his staff and the team to do a good job based on commitment and passion.”
Ranieri was shortlisted for the Guinea national team manager’s job last month but that vacancy went to Frenchman Didier Six.
Ranieri has taken charge of a host of clubs in a storied managerial career that includes spells at Juventus, Chelsea, Valencia, Monaco, Fulham, Inter Milan, amongst others.
The 67-year-old Italian was named FIFA Coach of the year in 2016 after leading an unfancied Leicester City side to a fairytale Premier League title despite being odds on favorites for relegation at the start of the season.
Ranieri spent part of last season in charge of Fulham but was sacked before taking over at AS Roma on a short-term deal towards the end of the campaign.
Ranieri’s first game in charge of Sampdoria will be against Roma next weekend.
