Pep Guardiola Loses Mother To Coronavirus
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lost his mother to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Dolors Sala Carrio died in a Barcelona hospital on Monday afternoon at the age of 82.
The news was confirmed by Manchester City, whose statement announcing the tragic passing read: “The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting coronavirus. She was 82-years-old.
“Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”
Guardiola has been in Spain ever since the Premier League was suspended because of the Coronavirus outbreak.
The 49-year-old donated €1m to the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation and Medical College of Barcelona last week to help with the purchasing of medical equipment for the fight against the virus.
City’s city rivals Manchester United have already started paying their tributes, tweeting: “Everyone at Manchester United is saddened to hear this terrible news. We send our heartfelt condolences to Pep and his family.”
'Everyone at Spurs sends their deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with Pep and his family at this time,' Tottenham Hotspurs tweeted.
'Really sorry to hear that Pep Guardiola’s mother has passed away. Thoughts are with him and his family. So sad,' former England striker Gary Lineker also wrote on Twitter.
Spain’s Coronavirus cases have topped 135,000 while over 13,000 deaths have been recorded.
