Mount Bemused By Gomez Boos
Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has admitted he thought the England fans were booing him when he was replaced by Joe Gomez in the 70th minute of England’s 7-0 win over Montenegro on Thursday night.
Gomez was greeted with jeers and boos from the home fans following his altercation with Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling at St George's Park on Monday, 24 hours after Liverpool’s game against the Citizens.
The incident prompted England manager Gareth Southgate to drop Sterling 72 hours before the Three Lions game against Montenegro.
The 20-year-old revealed he was confused by what happened during the game, but insists they are well focused on the next game.
“I thought they were booing me when I came off," Mount said. "It has gone now, everything has been worked out in the camp and now I think the focus goes on to the next game.
"We are a strong side together, we get together and stay together. So we will just focus on the next game.”
Tammy Abraham came on to score his first international goal and has jumped to defend Gomez and urged the England fans to support the team no matter the situation.
“We had an incident today with Joe. We’re all England, players or fans, we need everyone to be together,” Abraham said.
“At times like that we need fans to lift us up and help us, really. Going into tournaments like that, we need that.”
“We said after the game that it was unacceptable. We don’t need that. He’s a great player. Things happen in football, things happen between team-mates.”
“It’s just about dusting yourself off and moving on. As you can see, we’ve all moved on from the situation here. We’re thinking positive.”
