Mahrez Backs Mane To Win PFA Player Of The Year
Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez believes Liverpool’s Senegalese forward Sadio Mane deserves to win this season’s Professional Footballers Association(PFA) player of the year.
Mane’s 15 league goals so far this season has seen Liverpool clinch their first league title in three decades after Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
Mane has continued from where he left off in the 2018/2019 campaign, when he scored 22 times in the top flight to share the golden boot with teammate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The candidates for this season’s player of the year are yet to be announced but early frontrunners include Mane, Virgil Van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jamie Vardy and Kevin de Bruyne.
“I think it would be Mane,” Mahrez said when asked by BT Sport for his choice as reported by Metro.
“Not too many skills, he’s not a player of skills, but he’s efficient.
“He scores goals, like [Mohamed] Salah, when he was at Southampton, he was good, but he wasn’t as good as now.
“He’s improved a lot technically and in front of the goal. He scores a lot of goals now because he improved a lot. So yeah, I think this year it should be him.”
Mahrez became the first African footballer to win the PFA Player of the Year in 2016 when his 17 goals and 10 assists helped Leicester City win an unlikely Premier League title.
Salah and Van Dijk have won the last two editions of the PFA Player of the Year.
