Joining from Leicester City in the close season where he was a master commander at the heart of the Foxes’ defence Maguire will not hesitate to put on the captain’s armband for the 2012/13 Premier League champions.

Despite his captaincy ambitions, Maguire did not rule out his readiness to restore the club’s lost status both domestically and continentally as they suffer mixed results in the new season.

"Definitely. It's something I still want to improve on, my leadership qualities on the pitch and especially my talking.

"I want to demand more from the players, demand standards, but I'm obviously not concentrating on that at the moment.

"I’m fully focused on improving the team and getting this club back to where it should be.

"I do think I have a lot of experience and I can help our team, which is so young at the moment. We can help each other through as there are going to be plenty of good times, but probably some not-so-good times as well.

"We've got to learn and improve and make sure the good times become more frequent. We're working hard on the training pitch at the moment and are going to keep striving to improve."

Manchester United shelled out a staggering £80 million to sign the 26-year-old centre-back, making him the current most expensive defender in the sport after downing Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk's record of £75 million.

On the back of a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, United will be hosted by AZ Alkmaar for thier second game in the Europa League on Thursday.
