Liverpool Crowned Champions After Chelsea Beat Man City
Liverpool’s thirty-year wait for a Premier League title is over after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
The defeat for Manchester City means Jurgen Klopp’s men are now 23 points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side with just seven games remaining, making next week’s meeting between the two sides a dead rubber in the title race.
Chelsea’s victory has helped them tighten their grip on fourth spot and has taken them five points clear of Manchester United in fifth place. The Blues are now just a point behind third-placed Leicester City, whom they meet in the FA Cup quarterfinals at the King Power Stadium this weekend.
Chelsea took the lead at the Bridge on 36 minutes when United States international, Christian Pulisic waltzed past two Manchester City defenders from the halfway line, leaving him in a one-on-one situation with Ederson in the visitors’ goal before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. That was Pulisic’s second goal in as many games and his seventh in the Premier League this season.
The Cityzens equaliser came ten minutes after the break when ex-Chelsea man Kevin de Bruyne curled a free-kick beautifully into the hosts’ net from 25 yards out.
Frank Lampard’s men got the winner 12 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty after Fernandinho stopped a goal-bound effort with his hands and Willian sent Ederson the wrong way from the spot. Fernandinho was given a straight red card for his troubles, leaving City with 10 men for the rest of the contest.
