Gerrard will miss the home clash with Chelsea on Sunday as well as the trip to Leeds United on Tuesday.

A statement from the club read: “Aston Villa can confirm head coach Steven Gerrard will be unable to attend our next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.”

Gerrard was appointed Villa manager in November, replacing Dean Smith, and has led the West Midlands club to four wins in six games, to 10th on the Premier League table. The 41-year-old’s two defeats have come against Liverpool and champions Manchester City.

Aston Villa have already had one game against Burnley postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak in their camp.

The Premier League games scheduled for boxing have seen a distraction, with three games called off because of various coronavirus outbreaks.

Liverpool against Leeds United, Burnley versus Everton and Wolverhampton Wanders’ home tie with Watford have all been called off.
