Boca Juniors Rule Out Summer Move For Cavani

Boca Juniors club president, Jorge Amor Ameal, has ruled out a summer move for Paris Saint Germain frontman Edinson Cavani because the Argentine Superliga champions are financially unhealthy to afford his wages.

Cavani’s contract with the French champions runs out at the end of this season, and there is little hope he will sign a new deal after he unsuccessfully tried to engineer a move to Atletico Madrid in January.

The 33-year-old former Palermo striker has played second fiddle to Mauro Icardi in a season that he has also been blighted by fitness issues, restricting him to just 14 Ligue 1 appearances and four goals.

Boca’s sporting director, Jorge Bermudez, claimed earlier this week that they were interested in the Uruguay international and hoped a deal to bring him to the Bombonera stadium would happen ‘very soon’.

Ameal, however, does not believe Boca have the financial power to lure a player of Cavani’s stature to the club now.

"We are proud that a player like Cavani says he wants to wear our shirt, but our economic reality doesn't match with his," Ameal is quoted as saying to Radio Splendid by EFE.

"Of course, no one is going to argue that Cavani isn't a great player, but we have to think more about our existing players and believe in them."

Cavani has already etched his name in PSG history as he is currently the club’s all-time top scorer.

He has won five Ligue 1 titles among numerous domestic honours during his seven-year stay in France.
