De Gea Howler Sees Watford Sting Man United
Manchester United’s struggles against the lower sides continued on Sunday as they lost 2-0 to bottom side Watford in the Premier League at Vicarage Road.
After successive impressive victories over Tottenham and Manchester City recently, the Red Devils have now failed to beat Everton and Watford in their last two outings.
David de Gea was culpable for Watford’s opener and Aaron Wan-Bissaka did his team no favours by committing a bad foul for a penalty.
For Watford, it is only their second victory of the season which draws them level on points with 19th placed Norwich City.
Jesse Lingard should have put United in front in the 33rd minute after being put clean through by Anthony Martial, but with only Ben Foster to beat, his cheeky chip landed on the roof of the net.
Just six minutes after the break, De Gea endured a calamitous moment as he allowed Ismaila Sarr’s scuffed shot to slip through his fingers into the back of the net for the opening goal of the game.
Three minutes after going ahead, Watford were afforded the chance to extend their lead after Wan-Bissaka hooked down Sarr in the penalty box with referee Lee Mason pointing to the spot.
Up stepped Watford skipper Troy Deeney, who smashed the ball straight down the middle to give his side some much needed breathing space.
The introduction of the returning Paul Pogba breathed some life into the visitors’ play and Foster had to be on the alert to keep out Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford from range in the 57th and 72nd minutes respectively.
Pogba drew a good save out of Foster again in the 82nd minute after a slick one-two with Martial and the former United goalkeeper was again on hand to block Rashford’s goal-bound effort with his legs a minute to full time.
