‘Bad Loser’ Klopp Criticizes Atletico Tactics
Jurgen Klopp has slammed Atletico Madrid’s defensive approach after Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday.
Liverpool were cruising to victory after taking a 2-0 lead in extra time, but the Spaniards came from behind to win 3-2 thanks to Marco Llorente’s double and Alvaro Morata’s late goal.
The Reds were dominant and enjoyed a lot of possession throughout the game but the visitors rode their luck in large parts at Anfield to stun Liverpool.
In an interview with BT Sports after the game, Klopp said he could not understand why a good team like Atletico are set up to only defend and insists he was happy with his team’s display.
"I am completely happy with the performance. It’s so difficult to play a side like this,” the former Borussia Dortmund coach said.
"I don’t understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter attacks.”
"We accept it of course but it doesn’t feel right tonight. I realize I am a really bad loser, especially when the boys put such an effort in against world class players on the other side who defend with two rows of four.”
"We know in the last two years we had some lucky moments in the Champions League, you have to, to reach two finals, but today it was everything was against us in the decisive moments."
