Avram Grant Praises Chelsea’s Patience For Managers

The Blues have developed a ruthless streak of showing managers the exit under the Roman Abramovich era, with the likes of Roberto di Matteo, Andre Villas Boas, Luis Felipe Scolari, Rafael Benitez and Grant himself not lasting less than a season in charge.

In recent times, the likes of Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri have all had full seasons to work at Stamford Bridge and Grant has lauded the club for taking that initiative.

“The club have to be patient but I think they have learnt from their mistakes”, the former West Ham United and Ghana boss told The Athletic.

“They are a little bit more patient than before. Looking back, it wasn’t just me who was sacked after a brief spell. There was Andre Villas-Boas, Scolari and so on”.

“Everything starts before you name your coach and you understand the philosophy. They are more careful when they choose.

“They can make mistakes like everybody does, but look at how they were more patient with Jose Mourinho the second time, with Antonio Conte in the second season — which maybe wouldn’t have happened before."

Grant was the first manager to take Chelsea to a Champions League final in 2008, when they lost to Manchester United in Moscow, after replacing Jose Mourinho, but was relieved of his duties shortly after.

Chelsea currently lie fifth on the Premier League table despite a testing start to the season and Grant has lauded Frank Lampard for his work despite the paucity of resources at the club.

"My advice to them would be to be patient with Frank. The results are coming now but they will get better and better over time."

“Back in my day, they only thought about results. Results are still important now but I think they also think of the way a manager is working.

“This is the reason why they have put Frank in charge.”
