Redknapp Aims Swipe At Gareth Southgate Over England Call-ups
By Harry Morgan
Harry Redknapp has taken a swipe at Gareth Southgate and says the England coach has made the Three Lions too easy for players to break into.
The former Tottenham Hotspurs manager Gareth Southgate has made the Three Lions less competitive by calling in a lot of players who cannot command first-team places in their club.
Southgate went to the 2018 World Cup with his tried and tested players, and called-up a similar squad for the September international break.
However, the coach changed his hands in the October call-ups by inviting youngsters Jadon Sancho, Ross Barkley, James Maddison, Mason Mount, and Nathaniel Chalobah.
“It’s good to stick the kids in, but they’ve got to be up to it, they’ve got to be playing regularly for their club,” says Redknapp to talkSPORT.
“Years ago, you had to be a top, top player every week for your club to get in the England team.
“But now, you don’t even have to be in your club team on a regular basis to play for your country. It’s quite bizarre really how it’s changed.
“I think that’s a little bit of how it’s gone–we keep getting players in the side who can’t get in their club teams.
"These kids obviously have great futures, but they’ve got to earn it, they’ve got to work their way up.”
