Manchester United have appointed club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an interim manager until the end of the 2018/19 season after sacking Jose Mourinho on Tuesday.
Solskjaer spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford between 1996 and 2007, with his finest hour in a United shirt coming in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final when he came off the bench to score the winner against Bayern Munich deep in extra time.
The 45-year-old Norwegian scored 126 goals in 366 games during his time as a player at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer has previously spent time managing in the English Premier League after joining Cardiff City midway through the 2014/2015 season, but could not prevent the Bluebirds from relegation.
“Manchester United announced today that former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season,” read a statement on the club’s website.
“Solskjær will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as the first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.”
Solskjaer expressed his delight after being given the opportunity to manage the 20-time English Champions.
"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," said the Norwegian.
"I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."
Solskjaer’s first game in charge of United will be against his former club, Cardiff, on Saturday.
