Liverpool Fail To Regain Top Spot After Everton Draw
By Max Wise
Everton held their Merseyside neighbours Liverpool to a goalless draw game at Goodison Park on Sunday to deny them top spot in the English Premier League.
The result leaves Manchester City in pole position to retain the title after their 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday took them to the league’s summit.
As expected it was a frantic and energetic derby but on a whole it lacked clear goalscoring opportunities with sporadic goalmouth action.
Everton’s defence were able to frustrate the Liverpool attack as they restricted them to few chances to gain a valuable point and dent their neighbours’ title challenge.
The best chance of the first half fell to Mohamed Salah in the 28th minute after the Egyptian was played through by Fabinho, however Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal was equal to the task and made a huge save.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed down from a corner which Alisson saved shortly after the restart and Trent Alexander Arnold curled a free-kick straight at Jordan Pickford a few minutes later.
Liverpool now move onto 70 points, trailing Manchester City by a point, whiles Everton are 10th with 37 points.
