Late Spurs Own Goal Sends Liverpool Top Again
By Max Wise
Liverpool are back on top of the Premier League table after a scruffy 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspurs at Anfield on Sunday.
Liverpool are now two points ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand whiles only a point separate Tottenham in third place and Chelsea who are sixth as the race for the Champions League places goes to the wire.
Andrew Robertson found space and put in a wonderful cross from the left, allowing Roberto Firmino to get between three centre-backs to head down past Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal for the opener in the 16th minute
Liverpool had their tails up and three minutes later the hosts almost made it two through Trent Alexander-Arnold who hit a brilliant dipping strike wide of the Tottenham post after Robertson's cross had been headed out.
Dele Alli smashed a strike on the bounce from 25 yards out in the 33rd minute but it was too high and five minutes later Liverpool's man-of-the-moment Sadio Mane narrowly bent a lovely strike wide of the Tottenham right post.
Four minutes after the break Liverpool sharply worked a corner, and the ball into the box found Virgil Van Dijk who headed over at the back post.
Tottenham's best moment of the game fell to Harry Kane in the 56th minute, when the Englishman's low shot was parried away by Alisson into a dangerous area but Robertson was on hand to block Eriksen's follow up.
With 20 minutes to go the visitors found their equaliser through Lucas Moura. Harry Kane produced a brilliant ball over the top to find Kieran Trippier, who teed up Eriksen to find Moura in the box for the equalizer.
Five minutes later, Alexander-Arnold's cross-shot was tipped over by Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal.
As Liverpool pressed for the winner, they left gaps at the back, and Tottenham should have taken advantage when they found themselves in a two-versus-one situation but Sissoko launched a shot over the top.
The Reds made the visitors pay in stoppage time as Hugo Lloris failed to hold onto Mohamed Salah's header, allowing the ball to hit Toby Alderweireld over the line for a Liverpool winner.
