LA Galaxy To Honour Beckham With A Statue
By Max Wise
Major League Soccer side Los Angels Galaxy FC are to erect a statue at their home grounds in honour of former player David Beckham.
The gesture will make the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player the first ever footballer in the MLS to have a statue erected in his honour.
Beckham's statue will be unveiled outside the Dignity Health Sports Park before the side's first game of the new MLS season against Chicago Fire on March 2.
The former Manchester United midfielder became the first true global superstar to move to the MLS when he joined LA Galaxy from Real Madrid in 2007, and spent six seasons at the club, winning two MLS Cups.
Beckham's venture to the MLS arguably paved the way for other stars like Thierry Henry, Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Steven Gerrard, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Kaka, among others to join various Major League Soccer sides at the twilight of their careers.
The 43-year-old, who made 122 appearances for LA Galaxy during his time at the club, also played for AC Milan and French side Paris Saint Germain before bringing his career to a close.
Beckham is also the co-owner of MLS expansion club, Inter Miami, who will play in the United States top flight for the first time in 2020.
