LA Galaxy Honours David Beckham With A Statue

Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy have unveiled a statue in honour of their former player David Beckham outside the club’s stadium.

A report by predictionboard.com in early February revealed that LA Galaxy intended to honour the former England captain with the monument outside the Dignity Health Sports Park, and they revealed the statue before Galaxy’s 2-1 win over Chicago Fire in the MLS opener on Saturday.

"Today a dream came true," said Beckham, the owner of Inter Miami, who will make their MLS debut in 2020.

Beckham added: "I am truly proud you have created something to - a - keep me young and - b - give my family and friends and especially my kids, who can come here one day very soon and see something of their father and see what we created and what I achieved."

The gesture makes the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player the first ever footballer in the MLS to have a statue erected in his honour.

The former Manchester United midfielder became the first true global superstar to move to the MLS when he joined LA Galaxy from Real Madrid in 2007, and spent six seasons at the club, winning two MLS Cups.

Beckham's venture to the MLS arguably paved the way for other stars like Thierry Henry, Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Steven Gerrard, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Kaka, among others to join various Major League Soccer sides at the twilight of their careers.

The 43-year-old, who made 122 appearances for LA Galaxy during his time at the club, also played for AC Milan and French side Paris Saint Germain before bringing his career to a close.
