Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira is set to be on the sidelines for a month after he underwent a successful heart surgery on Wednesday which was performed by the club’s cardiologist Fiorenzo Gaita.
The World Cup winner realized the rate at which his heart beat has speed up when he was training with the team at the club’s training ground on Tuesday.
Khedira who once played for Spanish giants Real Madrid was diagnosed with atrial arrhythmia - an irregular heartbeat after the club’s medical team had made further enquiries on his situation before they recommended for a heart surgery.
The surgery has seen the German midfielder being ruled out for the side’s Champions League knockout tie against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and the second leg clash on March 12 as he is also set to miss the side's domestic league clash with arch rivals Napoli on March 3.
Sami Khedira has been battling with injuries this term as he suffered a thigh injury in September, serving five weeks on the sidelines before his return in November also witnessed an ankle injury.
Khedira has played nine Serie A games with two goals and one assist, three appearances in the Champions League, featured twice in the Coppa Italia and also played in the club's Supercoppa Italiana fixture making 15 games in all competitions this season for the Bianconeri.
A statement by the club confirmed the situation of the player after the surgery was successful.
“Today in the morning the player Sami Khedira underwent electrophysiological study and successful interventional therapy with ablation of an arrhythmogenic atrial focus, performed by Prof. Fiorenzo Gaita, JM cardiologist consultant for Juventus.
“After a short period of convalescence the above mentioned player will be able to resume his activity approximately within one month.”
