Henderson Not Giving Up On UCL Chances Despite Bayern Draw
By Nigel Phillips
Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson, is confident the Reds can still edge out Bayern Munich from the Champions League despite drawing barren with the German side at Anfield on Tuesday.
Liverpool’s much-anticipated Champions League knockout tie with Bayern Munich failed to live up to expectations and a goalless draw at Anfield leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side with plenty of work to do in the return fixture in Germany next month.
Jurgen Klopp, who joined Liverpool from German side Dortmund, again found his former Bundesliga rivals a tough nut to crack in their last-16 first leg encounter which had little to show in the way of goalmouth action and much more in the way of uncharacteristic errors.
The closest either side came to scoring was when Matip diverted Serge Gnabry’s cross into the chest of Alisson from point-blank range with the Brazilian knowing little about it.
But Henderson, who believes there is positivity in his side’s ability to keep a clean sheet in the game, is still buoyant that his side can grind the needed result against the Bavarians at the Allianz Arena in the return fixture.
“We kept a clean sheet, which is a positive,” says Henderson in a post-match interview.
“We had enough chances, I feel, especially in the first half, to score one or two but it’s not the worse result in the world.
“We’ve got to go there and put in a performance.
“But I thought the performance level was good. We just lacked that little bit in the final third in the second half.
“It’s still alive, for sure.
“We’ve got experience in the Champions League and I feel as though we can go there and hurt them."
“We’ll dust ourselves down and go again.”
