Chelsea’s Brazilian defender David Luiz has extended his stay at the club for a further two years.

Luiz’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season but he will now remain at Stamford Bridge until the conclusion of the 2020/2021 season.

The new deal handed to the 32-year-old former Benfica defender means that Chelsea have broken their tradition of giving players over the age of 30 just one year extensions.

Luiz has been an integral part of Maurizio Sarri’s side this season, making 48 appearances in all competitions, after featuring sparingly in former manager Antonio Conte’s plans last term.

Upon extending his stay with Chelsea, David Luiz said: ‘I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.

‘It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to try to do my best to help the team.’

Luiz, who is in his second spell at Chelsea, initially join the Blues from Portuguese side Benfica in January 2011, winning the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League in his first spell but left for Paris Saint Germain in 2014 for a then world record fee for a defender at £50m.

Luiz returned to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day in summer 2016 for £34m and helped the club win the Premier League title the following year.

In all, David Luiz has made 246 appearances for Chelsea across his two spells, scoring 18 goals.

Luiz will be hoping to win a third European trophy with Chelsea later this month when the Blues take on London rivals, Arsenal, in the Europa League final on May 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
