Breaking News: Sarri Appointed Juventus Manager
By Max Wise
Italian champions Juventus have confirmed the appointment of Maurizio Sarri as the club’s new manager.
Sarri will replace Massimiliano Allegri at the Serie A club after previously taking charge of Napoli for three seasons, leading the Naples-based club to second place in the 2017/2018 season.
Chelsea confirmed the exit of the Italian on Sunday after just a season in charge of the Blues.
Sarri led Chelsea to third place on the Premier League table last season and also finished as runners-up in the Carabao cup, where they lost to Manchester City on penalties in February.
The brightest spot of his spell in London however, came in the Europa League as Chelsea beat fellow Londoners, Arsenal, 4-1 in the final in Baku, Azerbaijan last month, giving the Italian his first ever trophy as a manager.
Sarri’s reign as Blues boss was however riddled with controversy as some sections of the Chelsea fans called for his dismissal when they became frustrated with his playing style dubbed ‘Sarriball’, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga undermined his authority when he refused to be substituted in the Carabao cup final in February.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "In talks we had following the Europa League final, Maurizio made it clear how strongly he desired to return to his native country, explaining that his reasons for wanting to return to work in Italy were significant.
"He also believed it important to be nearer his family, and for the wellbeing of his elderly parents he felt he needed to live closer to them at this point.
"Maurizio leaves Chelsea with thanks from us all for the work he and his assistants did during the season he spent as our head coach, and for winning the Europa League, guiding us to another cup final and a third-place finish in the Premier League.
"We would also like to congratulate him on securing the role as big as any in Serie A and to wish him the best of luck for the future."
Sarri’s place in the Stamford Bridge dugout is likely to be taken by former Chelsea midfielder and current Derby County manager, Frank Lampard.
