Spain Call Up Five New Players To Combat Potential Covid Outbreak
Spain have called up five new players as a stand by option in case there is a potential coronavirus outbreak in camp.
Captain Sergio Busquets tested positive for coronavirus over the weekend and the rest of the squad were placed in isolation as a precaution.
As a result, the Spain U-21 side will take the place of the senior team in Tuesday’s friendly game against Lithuania.
Rodrigo Moreno, Pablo Fornals, Carlos Soler, Brais Mendez and veteran Raul Albiol have been called up to train separately from the squad just in case of an emergency.
A statement from the Spanish Football Federation read: "In anticipation of the possible consequences that the positive test of Sergio Busquets could bring, the coaching staff has decided to incorporate a group of footballers to complete training during the next days under Luis Enrique's orders within a parallel bubble," the statement read.
"Tomorrow, the players Rodrigo Moreno (Leeds United), Pablo Fornals (West Ham United), Carlos Soler (Valencia CF) and Brais Mendez (RC Celta) will join the sessions in Las Rozas.
"In addition, once the game against Lithuania is over, a small group of footballers yet to be confirmed will join the training sessions of the senior team under the same conditions as the previous ones. They will train at different times and will not mix in any case with those already called up."
"Villarreal CF footballer Raul Albiol will join his teammates Rodrigo Moreno, Pablo Fornals, Carlos Soler and Brais Mendez in the group of footballers to complete training sessions over the next few days under Luis Enrique's orders within a parallel bubble," it added in a follow up statement.
Spain begin their EURO 2020 campaign against Sweden on June 14 followed by clashes with Poland and Slovakia.
