Scaloni Considering Position As Argentina National Team Boss
Lionel Scaloni is considering his position as manager of the Argentina national team.
Scaloni has been in charge of La Albiceleste since August 2018 when he replaced Jorge Sampaoli in the role and led them to the Copa America title in 2021.
The 45-year-old then delivered Argentina's first World Cup trophy since 1986 with victory over France at Qatar 2022.
Earlier on Wednesday, Argentina handed rivals Brazil their first ever home defeat in a FIFA World Cup qualifier thanks to Nicolas Otamendi's second half goal and Scaloni revealed afterwards that his time as Argentina boss could be coming to an end.
The former West Ham United defender has a contract until after the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, where Argentina will go in as defending champions.
“Argentina needs a coach who has all the energy possible and who is well ... I need to stop the ball and start thinking, I have a lot of things to think about during this time,” Scaloni, who took no questions, said in his opening remarks at the post-match press conference.
“These players have given a lot to the coaching staff and I need to think a lot about what I’m going to do. It’s not goodbye or anything, but I need to think because the bar is very high and it’s complicated to keep going and it’s complicated to keep winning.
“These guys are making it difficult, so I need to think about it for a while. I will talk to the FA president and the players afterwards.”
Argentina are top of South America's World Cup qualifying group with 15 points from six games.
