Roy Keane Labels Joao Felix ‘An Imposter’ After Portugal’s EURO 2020 Elimination
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has labelled Joao Felix an ‘imposter’ after the Atletico Madrid forward failed to impress off the bench in Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Belgium in EURO 2020 on Sunday.
Thorgan Hazard’s 42nd minute striker was enough to dump the holders out of the competition, with Belgium advancing to face Italy in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Allianz Arena.
Felix, a £113m signing for Atletico Madrid from Benfica in the summer of 2019, was a second half substitute for Fernando Santos’ men but his introduction was not enough to turn the game around for Portugal.
This was the 21-year-old’s first outing of EURO 2020 after he sat out all three group stage games but he did not escape the wrath of Keane for missing a good chance late on.
"I get really annoyed with it, particularly when they’re quality players," Keane said on ITV. "There’s no excuse for it, seeing players leaning back and just missing the target, at least test the goalkeeper, these are top players no getting away from that.
"Felix, when he came on, that guy’s an imposter, he’s an imposter. He comes on, your country needs you…hit the target! What was he? £100m? If I was [Cristiano] Ronaldo I’d certainly be going after him in the dressing room. Shocking.
"Felix and Fernandes were driving me crazy. They’ve no one to blame but themselves, they fought like champions to be fair, but Portugal just short."
