James is expected to miss up to four months of action.

The 24-year-old pulled up in the first half of Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Everton on December 10 and has not played since.

James has only played nine times for Chelsea this season and has not completed the full 90 minutes in any of those games.

He suffered a hamstring injury on the opening day of the season against Liverpool and missed the next two months before his recent comeback.

James has provided an update of his setback with a statement which reads: "The footballing world knew I got injured but the procedure I'd go down this time took slightly longer to figure out the best solution".

"I had surgery today to try fix my reoccurring hamstring issue, the recovery has started, both physically and mentally".

"Since this injury I've had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity".

"Believe me, I don't wanna be injured. I'm happiest when I'm playing football".

"Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or lows, it goes a long way".

In all, James has missed 89 games for Chelsea through injury since making his debut in 2019.
