Lewandowski, Neuer And De Bruyne Shortlisted For UEFA Men’s Player Of The Year Award
Europe’s football governing body have announced a three-man shortlist for the UEFA Men’s player of the year award, with Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer as well as Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne all in contention.
The three nominees mean that for the first time in ten years, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo have made it to the podium for the award.
The winner will be announced on October 1 when the UEFA Champions League group stage draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland.
Neuer captained Bayern Munich to their sixth European crown in Lisbon last month, keeping a clean sheet in the final as the Bavarians defeated French champions Paris Saint Germain 1-0.
Lewandowski ended the season as top scorer in the competition with 15 goals to his name. The Poland international scored 55 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich last season.
De Bruyne was instrumental in Manchester City’s run to the quarterfinals which ended after a 3-1 defeat to Olympique Lyon. The Belgium international ended the season as the PFA Player of the year after scoring 13 times and supplying a record-equaling 20 assists in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk won the UEFA Men’s player of the year in the 2018/2019 season, beating Messi and Ronaldo to the award after helping the Reds to their sixth European Crown.
