Lewandowski Bids Farewell To Retiring Fabianski
Poland captain Robert Lewandowski has bid an emotional farewell to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who called time on his international career against San Marino on Saturday.
Fabianski announced his retirement from Poland duty after EURO 2020 but was handed one last call-up to bid farewell to the national side.
The 36-year-old West Ham United goalkeeper was handed a starting berth against the minnows as Poland run out 5-0 winners to brighten their chances of qualifying for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
On the occasion of his 57th cap for Poland, Fabianski was substituted in the 57th minute and was reduced to tears as he was applauded off the pitch.
Fabianski made his debut for Poland in 2006 and made the travelling party for that year’s World Cup as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
In his farewell message to Fabianski, Lewandowski wrote on Twitter: “New challenges are ahead of us.”
“Thanks @lukasz.fabianski for all those years spent together on the pitch and great performances for #Polska. 15 years in the squad shows how much you meant to this team.
At club level, Fabianski keeps going strong for West Ham, with the former Arsenal and Swansea City goalkeeper starting all seven of their Premier League games this season.
Poland are third in their World Cup qualifying group behind Albania and leaders England.
